Hyperliquid's 7-Day Leaderboard: Big PnL, Small ROI — Mostly

The Hyperliquid public leaderboard is one of the few places in crypto where you can watch realized perp performance at scale, wallet by wallet. This week's 7-day cut, pulled on August 1, is a study in contrasts: the largest dollar gains came from accounts running billions in equity at low single-digit returns, while the flashiest ROI on the board belongs to an account whose starting balance was effectively zero. Both facts are worth reading carefully, because they say different things about where risk is actually being taken.
Here is the board as it stood:
| Trader | 7d PnL | ROI | Equity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0xa822…d748 | $340,577,923 | 2.6% | $13,605,145,261 |
| 0x1c49…cc3f | $73,150,865 | 1.6% | $4,590,062,542 |
| 0x2ee6…4d1c | $34,858,034 | 34,858,034.2% | $34,848,037 |
| 0xb83d…6e36 | $7,256,847 | 9.5% | $120,513,989 |
| 0xf822…e01a | $4,763,771 | 7.5% | $61,776,785 |
| 0x49e9…e1d0 | $3,731,577 | 15.2% | $25,508,156 |
The whales are grinding, not gambling
The two largest accounts tell the clearest story. The top seat realized $340.6M over seven days against $13.6B in equity — a 2.6% weekly return. The second, $73.2M against $4.6B, works out to 1.6%. Those are not lottery-ticket numbers. They are the signature of size deployed carefully: wide books, likely diversified across venues and instruments, where the constraint is not conviction but market depth. An account that large cannot lever up and swing without moving its own fills.
Note also what a 2.6% weekly realized return means if it were even loosely repeatable: it would be an extraordinary run-rate. The fact that the biggest players on the board are printing that while keeping ROI in the low single digits suggests the current environment is rewarding scale and execution more than directional aggression. When whales feel the need to gamble, you see it in their ROI. Right now, you don't.
One row on this board is an artifact, and it matters
The third entry shows a 34,858,034.2% ROI on roughly $34.8M of both PnL and equity. Read that plainly: the account's tracked starting balance was near zero, and essentially all of its current equity is this week's realized gain. That can mean a genuinely explosive levered run — or, more mundanely, a fresh wallet, a transferred position, or a deposit pattern that breaks the ROI denominator.
This is why we caution against copy-trading off raw leaderboard sorts. Realized PnL is a record of what happened, on that venue, in that window — not a forecast, and not a recommendation. The same market that produced these numbers also produced the liquidations that funded them.
The middle of the board is where the honest risk lives
Strip out the giants and the artifact, and the remaining three rows are the most informative. Accounts running $25M to $120M in equity posted 7.5% to 15.2% weekly ROI — meaningful risk, taken at a size where position management is still nimble. The $120.5M account's $7.3M week (9.5%) and the $25.5M account's $3.7M week (15.2%) imply real leverage and real directional exposure, sized aggressively but not recklessly.
That mid-size band is where perp risk appetite is genuinely visible right now. These traders are large enough that their returns aren't noise, small enough that they can still express a view without becoming the market. A week where this cohort clusters in high single digits to mid-teens, while the whales sit at 1–3%, reads as a market with tradeable movement — but one where the largest, presumably best-informed books are choosing throughput over exposure.
- The largest Hyperliquid books realized huge dollar PnL at just 1.6–2.6% weekly ROI — scale and execution, not directional bets
- The 34.8M% ROI entry is a denominator artifact (equity ≈ 7d PnL), a reminder to distrust raw leaderboard sorts
- Mid-size accounts ($25M–$120M) posting 7.5–15.2% weekly ROI are the clearest read on real risk appetite
- Leaderboard PnL is realized history on one venue — context for your own risk framework, not a copy-trade signal
